ICANN has announced that it has given the go-ahead at its meeting held on Thursday in Paris, the liberalization of the domains. From 2009 to anyone who wants to register a domain you can also freely choose the TLD (top-level domain).
Until now, the top-level domain was possible to choose from a limited set default and consists of geographical top-level domains (relative to the various nations) and the generic top-level domains (such as "com", the ".net" , the "org", etc..). From 2009 it will be possible to choose a word as any top-level domain.
You can then register domains as www.doberman.cane or www.wimbledon.tennis, you can use as extensions for domains ".news", ".sport" or ".italia" or extensions of "Xxx" or " .porn "for sites at red lights. Also, extensions can be written in all languages, from Russian to Arabic, from Chinese to Japanese. The extensions which coincide with the brands will not be automatically reserved.
The new system is expected to enter into force in the second quarter of 2009.
