Oracle ha rilasciato JavaFX 2.0. L'annuncio è stato dato al JavaOne 2011 in corso a San Francisco, tre anni dopo la presentazione di JavaFX al JavaOne 2008, e due anni e mezzo dopo il rilascio della prima versione di JavaFX.
JavaFX è una famiglia di prodotti basati sulla tecnologia Java che consentono lo sviluppo di Rich Internet Application (RIA).
Oracle ha intenzione di continuare lo sviluppo della piattaforma JavaFX come un progetto open source che sia parte di OpenJDK. Il codice sorgente di JavaFX sarà rilasciato sotto licenza GPL v2 con l'eccezione Classpath, come per gli altri progetti in OpenJDK. JavaFX runtime e il SDK continueranno ad essere rilasciati sotto la Java binary code license.

This version of Workstation includes many hardware improvements. To try new hardware features, you must upgrade the hardware version of your virtual machine or create a new virtual machine that uses the latest virtual hardware version.
- The display technology has been changed to provide a better experience for Unity users and users who have multiple monitors. These changes also allow you to add a projector to your laptop without restarting your virtual machine.
- Virtual machines can now support up to 64GB of memory. The host system should have more than 64GB of memory to use this feature.
- An HD Audio device is available for Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 2008, and Windows 2008 R2 guests. The HD Audio device is compatible with the RealTek ALC888 7.1 Channel High Definition Audio Codec.
- USB 3.0 support is available for Linux guests running kernel version 2.6.35 or later (Ubuntu 10.10) through a new virtual xHCI USB controller. To enable this feature, add the following line to the .vmx file: usb_xhci.present = "true". Do not enable this feature for Windows guests. Because Windows does not currently have a generic xHCI driver, this feature will not work in Windows.
- Bluetooth devices on the host can now be shared with Windows guests. With the latest hardware version, Bluetooth devices that are paired to the host system radio are available to Windows guests and can be paired from within the guest. You should not pair Bluetooth audio devices, such as headphones, or Bluetooth input devices, such as keyboards and mice, to a guest.
- You can now enable Virtual VT-X/EPT or AMD-V/RVI in the processor settings interface. With this feature, applications running in a guest can take advantage of these virtualization technologies. You can also run 64-bit guest operating systems inside of vSphere running inside Workstation.

LibreOffice 3.3.4 fixes several bugs, the next maintenance release 3.3.5 is scheduled for October. In the meantime, development is continuing on the 3.4 series, which offers new features. The next version in that branch – LibreOffice 3.4.3 – is expected by the end of August.
The Document Foundation maintains two editions of LibreOffice: version 3.3.x caters to conservative users, who wish to stick to a proven release in deep maintenance mode, with increasingly infrequent updates, while the 3.4 branch provides a more modern and featurefull release. We therefore strongly recommend everyone to update to the 3.4 series in the near future.

Secondo uno studio della società di ricerca Gartner Windows 7 risulterà installato sul 42% dei PC entro la fine del 2011, e sarà il sistema operativo principale a livello mondiale. Secondo lo studio il 94% dei PC venduti nel 2011 è dotato di Windows 7 come sistema operativo.
"Il miglioramento costante nel budget IT nel 2010 e nel 2011 sta contribuendo ad accelerare la diffusione di Windows 7 nel mercato enterprise negli Stati Uniti e in Asia/Pacifico, dove le migrazioni verso Windows 7 sono iniziate in grandi quantità dal quarto trimestre del 2010", ha dichiarato Annette Jump, research director di Gartner. "Tuttavia, le incertezze economiche in Europa occidentale, l'instabilità politica in alcuni paesi del Medio Oriente e Africa (MEA), e il rallentamento economico in Giappone dopo il terremoto e lo tsunami del marzo 2011 porteranno probabilmente ad una distribuzione più lenta di Windows 7 in quelle regioni".
"Entro la fine del 2011, quasi 635 milioni di nuovi PC in tutto il mondo dovrebbero essere venduti con Windows 7. Molte imprese hanno pianificato la loro migrazione verso Windows 7 negli ultimi 12-18 mesi, e ora si stanno muovendo rapidamente in questa direzione".
Le vendite di Apple iMac e di Mac OS X su nuovi PC hanno visto un aumento negli ultimi 12 mesi. Mac OS X è stato venduto per il 4% dei nuovi PC a livello mondiale nel 2010 contro il 3,3% nel 2008. Mac OS X è previsto che sia utilizzato sul 4,5% dei PC nel 2011 e questa quota dovrebbe crescere al 5,2% dei nuovi PC nel 2015.
"L'adozione dei computer Mac e di Mac OS X è il risultato della capacità di Apple di crescere ben al di sopra della media del mercato negli ultimi 12-24 mesi, grazie alla sua facilità d'uso e alla facilità di integrazione con altri dispositivi Apple, come l'iPhone, l'iPad, l'iPod touch e con l'ecosistema di applicazioni e programmi Apple".
Linux dovrebbe rimanere un sistema operativo di nicchia per i prossimi cinque anni con la sua quota inferiore al 2% a causa dei costi ancora elevati di migrazione delle applicazioni da Windows a Linux. Nel mercato consumer Linux verrà eseguito su meno dell'1% dei PC, anche il successo di Linux con i mini-notebook è stato di breve durata, e ad oggi sono pochi i mini-notebook che hanno Linux preinstallato. Gartner non si aspetta per Chrome OS, Android o webOS una quota di mercato significativa per i PC nei prossimi anni. Gli analisti ritengono che per essere considerati come valida alternativa ad un PC tradizionale sarà necessario prima di tutto ottenere posizioni forti sui dispositivi client emergenti, quali Web books e Media tablet.
