Oracle ha annunciato il rilascio della versione 5.5 (5.5.8) di MySQL. Il MySQL Community Edition 5.5, che è rilasciato sotto licenza GPL (GNU General Public License), ed è disponibile per il download gratuito da questa pagina, comprende InnoDB come storage engine di default. In questa versione infatti MyISAM viene sostituito da InnoDB (sviluppato da Innobase, società controllata da Oracle) come storage engine predefinito.

MySQL 5.5 offre miglioramenti significativi permettendo agli utenti di migliorare le prestazioni e la scalabilità delle applicazioni web in più ambienti operativi, inclusi Windows, Linux, Oracle Solaris e Mac OS X.

Con il rilascio di MySQL 5.5 gli utenti trarranno beneficio da:

• Miglioramento delle prestazioni e scalabilità: MySQL database e lo storage engine InnoDB sono stati migliorati per offrire prestazioni ottimali e scalabilità quando sono in esecuzione sul più recente hardware e software disponibile (CPU multi-core e ultimi sistemi operativi disponibili). Inoltre, con questa versione InnoDB è ora lo storage engine predefinito per il database MySQL, offrendo transazioni ACID, l'integrità referenziale e crash recovery.

• Migliorata l'usabilità: migliorati gli indici ed il partizionamento delle tabelle, supporto a SIGNAL / RESIGNAL, e la diagnostica avanzata, incluso un nuovo PERFORMANCE_SCHEMA, migliorata la gestibilità di MySQL 5.5.

Microsoft ha rilasciato un add-on (componente aggiuntivo o estensione o plug-in) per Firefox che permette la riproduzione di video codificati con il codec H.264 su pagine web utilizzando funzionalità presenti in Windows 7.

Il nuovo add-on "estende la funzionalità del precedente plug-in per Firefox e consente di offrire video nel formato H.264 nelle pagine web, utilizzando lo standard W3C HTML5, per lavorare su Windows. Poiché i video H. 264 sono diffusi sul web questo ponte di interoperabilità è importante per gli utenti di Firefox che sono clienti di Windows"

H.264 (MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding, MPEG-4 AVC o semplicemente AVC, Advanced Video Coding) è stato uno dei primi standard di compressione per i video ad alta definizione ed è diventato un standard de facto. Oracle ha annunciato il rilascio di OpenOffice 3.3, e ha inoltre annunciato il rilascio di Oracle Cloud Office, suite office per il web e mobile. OpenOffice include il supporto per Open Document Format (ODF) e altri miglioramenti. Oracle Open Office è disponibile in due versioni Standard ed Enterprise, a partire da £ 33 e £ 60, rispettivamente. OpenOffice 3.3 sarà disponibile per il download sul sito openoffice.org (al momento sul sito è ancora presente la settima release candidate di OpenOffice) ed è rilasciato sotto licenza (LGPLv3).

A partire da Gingerbread (Android 2.3) Android utilizzerà il file system Ext4, a rivelarlo Tim Bray, Android Developers Blog. Ext4 sostituirà l'altro file system Yaffs (Yet Another Flash File System), in genere utilizzato come file system predefinito. Theodore Ts'o fa notare sul suo blog come Yaffs sia single threaded e questo "sarebbe stato un collo di bottiglia su sistemi dual core".

Il PHP development team ha annunciato il rilascio di Php 5.3.4, aggiornamento di mantenimento della serie 5.3 che include un gran numero di bug fix. Changelog disponibile a questa pagina.

Security Enhancements and Fixes in PHP 5.3.4:

The first of the test builds for the 8.2/7.4 Release Cycle is now available for amd64, i386, ia64, pc98, and sparc64 architectures. Files suitable for creating installation media or doing FTP based installs through the network should be on most of the FreeBSD mirror sites. MD5/SHA256 checksums of the images are at the bottom of this message.
The ISOs for this build do not include packages other than the docs. For amd64 and i386 "memstick" images are available that can be copied to a USB "memory stick" and used for installs on machines that support booting from that type of media.
