The X.Org Foundation and the global community of X.Org developers announce the release of X11R7.7 - Release 7.7 of the X Window System, Version 11. This release is the eighth modular release of the X Window System. The next full release will be X11R7.8 and may happen in 2013.
This release is part of our celebration of 25 years of X11, recognizing the 25th anniversary of X Window System Version 11, Release 1 (X11R1) on September 15, 1987. We will continue this celebration later this year at the X.Org Developer Conference, hosted by SuSE in Nürnberg, Germany on September 19-21.
X11R7.7 supports Linux, BSD, Solaris, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows and GNU Hurd systems. It incorporates both new features and stability and correctness fixes, including support for reporting multi-touch events from touchpads and touchscreens which can report input from more than one finger at a time, smoother scrolling from scroll wheels, better cross referencing & formatting of the documentation, pointer barriers to control cursor movement, and synchronization fences to coordinate between X and other rendering engines such as OpenGL.

On the graphical side this milestone now features gimp 2.8 (with single window option) and the latest updates to GNOME and KDE packages (including Qt 4.8.1 and KDE SC 4.8.3, GNOME 3.4.2). Heavy work has been going on in the area of bringing Xorg 12.1 and split-up Xorg packages to Factory. Moving from there, the new graphical stack combined with the new compiler tools (llvm, GCC 4.7) and the new Mesa can bring cool new stuff: llvmpipe bringing gnome-shell to non-accelerated systems and the svga gallium driver featuring 3D support to VMware VMs. We have switched from the old bootsplash to the modern Plymouth with our own plymouth openSUSE theme.

Ogni giorno vengono attivati più di 500 mila nuovi dispositivi mobili Android, inoltre il tasso di attivazione di nuovi dispositivi Android è in crescita del 4,4 per cento ogni settimana, secondo quanto scritto da Andy Rubin, Senior VP della divisione mobile di Google, su Twitter. A dicembre 2010 era stato lo stesso Rubin a rivelare che erano più di 300 mila i dispositivi mobili Android attivati ogni giorno.

Annunciato il rilascio di PCLinuxOS 2011.6 per sistemi a 32 e a 64 bit.
"PCLinuxOS KDE 2011.6 for 32-bit and 64-bit computers is now available for download. The Linux kernel was updated to version 2.6.38.8. Additional kernels are available from our repositories such as a PAE kernel for computers with more than 4 GB of memory. A BFS kernel for maximum desktop performance and a standard kernel with group scheduling enabled. X.Org Server was updated to version 1.10.2. Mesa updated to 7.10.3 and libdrm to version 2.4.26. These updates bring enhancements to the PCLinuxOS desktop including speed, 3D desktop support for most Intel, NVIDIA and AMD/ATI video cards, better font rendering, black screen fixes for most NVIDIA cards, better Flash playback and more."

Mozilla ha annunciato il rilascio della versione 5.0 del suo client di posta elettronica Thunderbird. Thunderbird 5.0 è basato sullo stesso motore di rendering Gecko di Firefox 5 e include un nuovo Add-ons Manager.
The latest version of Thunderbird includes more than 390 improvements and performance enhancements that make Thunderbird more responsive, faster to start up and easier to use. Thunderbird delivers several improvements to some favorite features such as RSS feeds, Attachment management, and Tabs which can now be reordered and dragged into a new window.

- Lost formatting with Excel XLS export
- MS Office 2010 complains about damaged MS Office 2003/XP documents created by LibreOffice 3.4
- PowerPoint PPTX files created by LibreOffice can't be opened by MS Office Web Apps; PowerPoint PPT files created by LibreOffice can't be opened by MS PowerPoint Viewer 2010 but they can be opened by MS Office
- MS OFFICE document recovery fails after crash
- Data in reports created by Report Wizard do not display all data records
- In forms, all radio buttons are selected
- Writer crashes when using undo-redo on moved formulas
OpenOffice dovrebbe diventare un progetto di Apache Software Foundation. È questa la proposta annunciata da Oracle tramite il suo vice presidente Luke Kowalski
"With today's proposal to contribute the OpenOffice.org code to The Apache Software Foundation's Incubator, Oracle continues to demonstrate its commitment to the developer and open source communities. Donating OpenOffice.org to Apache gives this popular consumer software a mature, open, and well established infrastructure to continue well into the future. The Apache Software Foundation's model makes it possible for commercial and individual volunteer contributors to collaborate on open source product development."
Dovrebbero quindi cadere i timori di quanti prevedevano per OpenOffice un futuro non più open source ne' da software freeware. The Document Foundation in un comunicato auspica "la riunificazione dei progetti OpenOffice.org e LibreOffice in una sola comunità di eguali", ma conclude che vi sono comunque ancora delle differenze in materia di licenze e membership tra Apache software foundation e il progetto LibreOffice.

Windows 8, come confermato dal CEO di Microsoft Steve Ballmer, vedrà la luce nel 2012, molto probabilmente nella seconda metà dell'anno.
